Sparging setup
grains in lauter-tun
open up clamp to allow flow
"recirculating" |
My sparging setup follows "Joy of
Homebrewing".
From top to bottom: <---- Bucket for hot sparge water. Load with 170F water just prior to transfering mash to false bottom bucket. <---- Bucket with false bottom for grains
<---- Bucket to collect sweet wort And hoses between each. Gravity does the work. ------------------------------------------------------------ Time is up (90 minutes of mashing), we open up the picnic cooler and transfer (scoop out) grains, liquids, and all into the false bottom bucket (make sure your clamps are closed). When you have enough out that you can safely handle the cooler, pour in the rest. Rinse out the last bit of grains with some of your spare water.
Open up the clamp from the lauter-tun (false-bottom) and allow about 1/2 gallon to flow into collecting bucket. Close clamp.
Pour back into lauter-tun. Repeat until there is very little grain matter getting past the false-bottom. This sets up the grain bed for filtering. Release the clamp for the sparging water and use the hose to either sprinkle over the grain bed top or set up some sort of sparging arm. I sprinkle, trying to maintain the liquid level near the top of the grain bed. Overall flow is such that sparging takes about 30 - 45 minutes. Collect for 6 gallons.
