Skinny English Ale

Sometimes you just don't want a high alcohol beer - just something refreshing.

The English had it figured out - English Ordinary Bitter.  Refreshing and Clean.

This is an all-grain single stage, picnic cooler method.

Details:

Yield:  5 gallons        Final Gravity:  1.008 - 1.010        SRM 8.5        IBU 33

Original Gravity:  1.040        4 % Alcohol by Volume

 

Grain Bill:

6.5 lb. 2-row Muntons Pale Ale Malt

0.5 lb. Muntons Crystal (49 - 64 L)

2 oz Munich Malt

1.25 oz Fuggles (Bittering - entire boil)

0.5 oz  Fuggles  (Flavor - last 15 minutes of boil)

1 tsp. Irish Moss (last 15 minutes)

0.5 oz Fuggles (Aroma - last 2 minutes of boil)

 

1st Choice: White Labs 013 London Ale Yeast

2nd Choice:  White Labs 002 English Ale Yeast

 

Mash all grains together at 150F for 90 minutes in the picnic cooler.  8.75 quarts water at 165F to mash in to get 150F. Sparge with 17.5 quarts at 170F.  Make up to 6.5 gallons for the boil.  Cook to 5.5 gallons.

 

Ferment in primary for 3 or 4 days then transfer to secondary for 7 days.  Bottle with 5 oz corn suger.
