Get started early in the year since this style benefits from several months of lagering...

This is an all-grain single stage, picnic cooler method.

Details:

Yield:  5 gallons        Final Gravity:  1.008 - 1.010        SRM 10.7        IBU 25

Original Gravity:  1.060        6 % Alcohol by Volume

 

Grain Bill:

6.0 lb. 2-row Weyermanns Pilsner Malt

5.0 lb Wyermanns Munich Malt

1.0 lb Carahelle

1.0 oz Perle (Bittering - entire boil)

2.0 oz  Hersbruker  (Flavor - last 20 minutes of boil)

1 tsp. Irish Moss (last 15 minutes)

 

1st Choice: White Labs 820 Octoberfest Lager Yeast

2nd Choice:  White Labs 800 Pilsner Yeast

 

Mash all grains together at 150F for 90 minutes in the picnic cooler.  15.0 quarts water at 165F to mash in to get 150F. Sparge with 7.5 gal at 170F.  Boil to 5.5 gallons.

 

Ferment in primary for 3 or 4 days then transfer to secondary.  Lager at cold (40F) for at least 2 months.  Bottle with 5 oz corn sugar.
